If you ever wondered how and why birds wear those tiny bracelets on their legs, my book takes you through a day of bird banding. You start with unfurling the nets, then disentangling the netted birds, to bird banding and recording the data for a national database. Finally, the bird is released. I think you will enjoy seeing this process captured in photos.
I took the photo of a grey angelfish against the purple coral in the Bahamas aboard the Aqua Cat. That's when I got the idea for an ABC book with A is for Angelfish. For over ten years I have dove in the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, off the coasts of Mexico, Central America and South America, as well as in the cold waters of Canada and Alaska to get all the pictures for this book.
The special feature of my book is that I give you a hint as to what the creature will be before you turn the page. For example, for the letter "F" there is a photo of a frog; when the page is turned, you see a photo of a frog fish. See if you can guess all the fish from the hints. Enjoy!
It has taken me seven separate trips to the Everglades to capture the photos for this book. The Everglades are much more than gators, egrets and herons. This endless “river of grass” supports an endless variety of flora and fauna. The alphabetic journey through Southern Florida forced me to select just 26 pictures from thousands to capture a truly unique ecosystem. I hope you enjoy my selections.
I grew up hearing the family legacy of Tristam de Luna who was somehow responsible for the founding of St Augustine, Florida. The story as I later researched it was close to the actual facts. It just wasn’t St. Augustine, but rather Pensacola that Tristam led an ill-fated expedition to. Other stories that were vaguely recalled were about my great grandfather’s death while leading a troop of volunteers to the Spanish/American war and one story about my great great grandfather escaping from Morro castle in Havana. I am grateful that in his autobiography Jim expounds on these stories and makes them come to life with fascinating details.
