These imaginative conversations help us learn parts of our history we often neglect and awaken us to a part of the world we often ignore— the many statues round us.

In Volume #1 of the three-part series The Central Park Statues Speak, author George Robinson introduces five characters who speak to the historical and literary statues in Central Park. Able to communicate through technology, each statue is the subject of a question and answer session which tells the story of their life and rich history. The author’s knowledge of each subject forms a vivid portrayal that jumps from the pages. This first book leaves the reader wanting more.  Looking forward to future books!

The statues in Central Park have been so mute for so long that they may seem to be erected there by accident.  People pass them by without the slightest shrug, but the statues have stories that may excite the young and convince them to raise their sights from the latest social media craze.  George Robinson, long a middle and high school teacher, knows how to make the statues speak to the young.  Shakespeare doesn’t need Robinson’s help, and Bobby Burns and Sir Walter Scott may not either, but Fitz-Greene Halleck and Balto surely do.  And while some young people may know that Susan B. Anthony once appeared on silver dollars, they probably know less about other Suffragists, Sojourner Truth and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.  Written with a warm heart and infectious enthusiasm, The Central Park Statues Speak will engage young readers and many older ones too.

The Central Park Statues Speak seamlessly integrates tales from America’s past into a fun and informative dialogue between high school students and near-mythical historical figures. Incorporating technology and today’s high paced society, George Robinson has found an interactive and thrilling way to engage today’s students with the past, by bringing it into the present. The passages contain all the information of primary sources, or textbooks, but is presented in an easily digestible way that allows anyone interested in history to dive right in. While these figures are no longer with us, Dr. Robinson’s book allows us to imagine what it would be like to talk to them, and in doing so, keeps their stories alive.
